When I started teaching at USD #393/Solomon in 2004, Brooke Wallace (now Terrapin), was in the 3rd grade. Right from the start, I knew this girl had talent! Not only was she an awesome artist, but she had the best heart!! At Solomon, I taught K-12th grade art, therefore I had Brooke all the way through High School. We entered her art, anywhere we could; and I believe she still holds the record for the most art awards received at competitions. She graduated from H.S. in 2013 and continued on with her education at Kansas State University. She graduated from there in 2017, where she earned a degree in Fashion Design. I have not only had the wonderful opportunity to support her in her endeavors, but have gotten to watch her grow from a little girl into now, an established artist and woman. I could go on and on about Brooke’s accomplishments in and outside of the art arena… but what makes my heart so happy, is that she is “here”! Yep, right here in Wabaunsee County!! Her and her husband, Nick Terrapin live in Alma!!! She does her “art”, right at home! Find out more about exactly what she does, here~ https://www.midwesttwist.com/
What happens next, just make this “story” even more heartfelt to me…
Erin Debler reached out to me, about a year ago, to see if I could advise with helping with her daughter’s proposed mural project. I had not had Anna as an art student yet because she was still attending the Lutheran School. I did though have Anna’s brothers- Dalton and Jacob and enjoyed them, in class and got to know their family. At the time I was working on an art commission of my own and also thought it might be better to direct her to someone local, as I lived at the time and hour away. So… who better than, my former student Brooke! …and the rest is is “history”! …actually right downtown Alma- south of “Mel’s Coffee”~ 405 Missouri Street, owned by Kim Herren! If you HAVEN’T checked out this beautiful mural, PLEASE DO! …AND I got the pleasure of having Anna as an art student (6th grade), last semester- her first year attending USD #329/Wabaunsee; yay!! She did great… and what I loved most was her work ethic and how much she craved learning more and more. I also can’t wait to see where our relationship will go, in the future!
Here are some pictures for you to view… and I have also included a picture included Kim’s write up that she did about the project, for the paper~

HS 🏀 results at home tonight: both varsity teams swept Cair Paravel (girls 61-17 & boys 67-56). Play at Council Grove tomorrow.
