The members of the Class of 2023 at Wabaunsee High School accepted 30 diplomas on Sunday, May 14, 2023. Jacob Meseke welcomed his class, followed by class memories from each year in high school. Other than sports memories. The fact was highlighted that this class had a not-so-normal high school career.
Upon having what was considered a normal start to freshman year, the Class of 2023 ended their freshman year remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools nationwide were shut down in March of 2020 due to the raging virus resulting in online schooling. Sophomore year came with other adjustments, such as mask-wearing, quarantines, and social distancing. Junior year was the most normal of their high school years with minimal quarantines. Senior year was back to what was considered normal for a high school student.
A total of seven seniors participated in band or choir. Jazlyn Posch and Lanson Parry performed solos during the choir piece, titled "Climb Higher" by Pinkzebra. Austin Spellman, Kwinton Willer, and AJ Grutsch could be heard as part of the band's song, "Light Cavalry Overture" arranged by Mark Williams.
Six seniors earned academic awards with Annie Wright being top in class and giving the class academic speech. The presentation of flowers was next on the list. All listened to "'Til You Can't" by Cody Johnson as a white rose was given to those chosen by class members. To conclude speeches, Annie addressed the class in a farewell speech. She expressed that, "as always it's a great day to be a Charger!"
The presentation of diplomas was given by board president Justin Frank. Principal Steve Oliver presented the class with their diplomas. The closing song was "Por ti volar" by Andrea Bocelli.
